What are the Best Ways to Make My Teen Feel Comfortable Behind the Wheel?

Tips for Getting Your Teen Comfortable with Driving

When we were teenagers, we couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel of our parents’ station wagon and learn how to drive. And after getting our driver’s license, we were eager to enjoy some freedom and go places on our own. Unfortunately, some teens no longer get excited over this longtime rite of passage and just expect Mommy and Daddy to chauffeur them around. If you are pushing your kids to gain some independence, we have some tips to help you out so they can feel confident behind the wheel.

Find an Empty Parking Lot and Drive Around

One of the best ways to get comfortable behind the wheel is going to an empty parking lot and get your kid to drive around. Let them go wild and have some fun, and doing it in the winter is even more exciting when you are whipping donuts! Be sure to practice parking perfectly in the stalls. Once they gain a little confidence, it is time for them to venture out on the streets.

Get Them Behind the Wheel of a Smaller Vehicle

While we fondly remember the family’s giant station wagon, most of us agree that it’s better to learn to drive with a compact car like the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic, both of which are easy to maneuver in tight parking areas (especially parallel parking) and heavy traffic.

Be Kind and Encouraging in the Passenger Seat

Many teens are nervous about learning to drive because their parents scream at them or hurl insults. Sure, you don’t want to end up in a collision, and there are times where you will need to yell “HIT THE BRAKES!”, but try be encouraging and use positive enforcement. When improvement is needed, gently point out the flaws and offer advice on how to do them correctly.

Happy Driving!

Best Way to Prevent Your Toyota or Vehicle’s Battery from Dying When You Aren’t Driving Often

It is an understatement when we say that we are driving less due to the encouragement of staying at home and social distancing. While this saves money in many ways (such as gas), it is important that you keep up with your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. It is important to run your Toyota or Honda vehicle regularly to ensure that the battery doesn’t die from sitting for too long, but how often should you be doing it?
