4 Things to Watch in Cleveland Browns Training Camp

As you know from following the Allan Nott blog or by simply scrolling down the page, we dedicate most of of our posts to information about the Honda and Toyota vehicles on our lot, but every now and then we like to stray from the norm and discuss local events and things we know are on your mind. And with August approaching, we know many of you are getting the itch for NFL football, and more specifically, Cleveland Browns football. Certainly, the arrival of Johnny Manziel is the big story, but there is more to keep an eye on than Johnny Pigskin, so here are 4 things to watch in Cleveland Browns training camp this year.

1. Progression of Rookie CB Justin Gilbert

Remember Justin Gilbert? The guy the Browns drafted BEFORE Johnny Manziel. Well, he just signed his rookie contract and will be reporting for camp. With Joe Haden already established as one of the league’s best corners, Gilbert will have the opportunity to work on the other side of the all-pro. If he learns quickly and lives up to the hype, the Browns secondary will likely be among the league’s best.

2. The Battle for Inside Linebacker

The Browns released long-time inside linebacker D’Qwell Jackson this offseason and replaced him with Karlos Dansby. While Dansby will be one of the starters, the Browns 3-4 defense requires two inside linebackers. Last year’s starter, Craig Robertson, is back from last year and is likely the front-runner for the 2014 season. But a lackluster performance in 2013 opens the door for rookie Chris Kirksey from the University of Iowa.

3. Who will catch passes from….someone

The uber-talented Josh Gordon may miss the entire season due to suspension, and although the Browns still have pro-bowl tight end Jordan Cameron, some of the guys on the outside are going to have to catch balls. The Browns signed Miles Austin and Nate Burleson, who both struggle with injuries, as well as Andrew Hawkins, who spent the past few years with the Browns in-state rival. The multitude of question marks at WR leave the door open for anyone to emerge, and the starters may well depend on who is taking snaps week 1.

4. Hoyer or Manziel?

Obviously, the battle between Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel will be the biggest competition in Browns camp, and one of the most watched in entire NFL. As Hoyer returns from an ACL injury and Maziel continues to learn the playbook and battle the critics, it will be interesting to see who emerges as the better option when week 1 rolls around. Scratch that, it will be interesting the entire season.

Browns training camp kicks off Saturday June 26 at 9:30 a.m. and runs until August the final preseason game on Aug. 18.
